A Summer time Week at the South-west Coast
Kerala unfolds a cool panorama of backwater and seaside thrills
_______________________________________________________________

Kerala, the lush green strip in the south west of India, is a land apart. This little green paradise is edged on the one side by the forested ranges of the western ghats & on the other side by Arabian Sea. All along the coast are a network of backwaters, lagoons & canals - the lifeline of the people who live along its banks.

Arrive at Kochi. Pick up at airport by tour executive and transfer. Half-day sightseeing of the beautiful coastal city—one of the largest ports of India. Kochi is a cluster of islands and narrow peninsulas. Here you can see the oldest church in India, congested Portuguese-built colonies, Chinese fishing nets, an ancient "white Jewish" community who settled here 1000 years ago, a fabulous 16th century synagogue, a palace which contains the most beautiful murals, and the oldest European fort in India.
Drive to Alleppey (renamed Allappuzha) after lunch and transfer to Kayaloram Lake Resort, a haven of water-sports and lazy detours on the fascinating backwaters by row boat or canoe. In the evening, experience healthy indulgences for mind and body, e.g. massages, mud baths, etc. Other activities include fishing.

More backwater magic and cruises on the Vembanad Lake. Moonlit nights here have a unique fabulous charm.

Days THREE & FOUR—IN AND AROUND THEKKADY
High on the hills at Thekkady, from your suite in the Thrisangu Hill Resort, watch Nature unfold its enchantments amidst silvery clouds, misty hilltops, dense woodlands, tea plantations and aromatic spice farms On the fourth day, travel to Periyar, best known for its 800 sq. km wildlife sanctuary. The Periyar Lake lies at the heart of the sanctuary. Take an elephant ride around this lake to see tigers, deer, wild dogs, lion-tailed macaque, Malabar squirrel and sloth bears. The lake attracts all kinds of water birds. In the vicinity are lofty observation towers, and a medieval palace, now a hotel. A quick lunch at Thekkady and back to Periyar crowns the day.

Day FIVE—KOVALAM
Morning drive to Kovalam, 270km away, and transfer to Swagat Holiday Resorts for lunch.

Kovalam Beach is 16km south of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala. It is one of the finest beaches in India. It consists of silvery white sands, palm-fringed bays separated by rocky highlands. The natives are pleasant, and the weather is obliging and balmy. At the Beach, visit a health spa and indulge in water sports, catamaran rides to the sea, and if desired, cruise to Kanniyakumari, 50km away, called the land’s end of India.

At Kanniyakumari, the three seas—Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and Bay of Bengal—meet. Enjoy the breathtaking sight of simultaneous sunset and moonrise, as if pre-determined! Also, visit the Vivekananda Memorial—the commemoration of the meditative practice that the sage of modern India undertook. The memorial is built on a rock, called Vivekananda Rock.

Day SIX—THRUVANANTHAPURAM
It is hard to imagine that this city, built over seven luxuriously forested hills, is the capital. Low, red-tiled roofs, narrow winding lanes, intimate cafes, and friendly people mark it out from other state capitals. The biggest attraction of the capital is the Sri Padmanabhaswamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The temple has a huge image of Lord Vishnu reclining on the coils of the Anantha, the divine serpent. The name of the city means "Abode of Anantha".

The city zoological park attracts large crowds. The Museum and the Art Gallery are excellent vaults of gold Roman coins, handicrafts, paintings, relics of different faiths, etc. If desired, you may go for Ayurvedic massage, watch the classical dances and martial arts performances such as Kalaripayattu. Shopping is a pleasure trip to antiques and curios

Day SEVEN—"GOOD BYE"
Transfer to airport or railway station at Thiruvananthapuram.
Optional Activities :
1. Ayurvedic Massage
2. Water Sports at Kovalam.
3. Boating at Periyar Lake.
4. Kathakali dance performance.
5. Elephant ride on the Tropical Forests.
